The Commission is pleased to recognize the Mohave Sportsman’s Club for its leadership in conservation and education.
The Mohave Sportsman’s Club has been in continuous operation in the Kingman area since 1936. Of the many programs and projects the club is responsible for, a few examples stand out as deserving recognition. The first is the annual Boquillas Ranch Clean-up, which is held each April at the 750,000 acre Boquillas Ranch in unit 10. This program is a part of the Department’s Adopt-A-Ranch program, which works statewide to promote cooperation between sportsmen and women and the landowners who work so hard to provide access to public lands.

For the past several years, the Mohave Sportsman’s Club has also conducted “Operation Dove Watch” in Mohave County. This very successful project has club members strategically placed at various locations across the county during the September dove hunts, passing out litter bags and advising hunters that members are watching for violations to report to the Department. This program has been very effective in reducing litter complaints from area ranchers, and has fostered better landowner-sportsmen relations in Mohave County.

The club was also instrumental this year in re-opening the Cane Springs Ranch in northwestern Mohave County to hunters. Club members met with the new owners of the ranch, which has 36,000 acres of privately deeded property, and the owners agreed to open the ranch for both small and big game hunting.

And in one of their premier sponsorship efforts, the club was co-sponsor of the “Kids Fishing Day 2002.” This is the largest youth fishing activity in Mohave County, with over 200 kids attending from all over Arizona.

The club also operates the 7-Mile Hill public shooting range in the Kingman area, where they offer a junior marksmanship program. The range has a trap range, pistol range, and combat range, and newly upgraded clubhouse facilities where the Department’s Hunter Education classes are held.

The Commission is proud to recognize the Mohave Sportsman’s Club as the Conservation Organization of the Year for its leadership in conservation and education. We want to thank the club and its members for all of their hard work, and we look forward to their continued success.
